Particle Physics
Much of my work involves design and engineering for physicists - folks far smarter than myself. They typically want to transform a rack of equipment into something small, portable, inexpensive and of course, easy to use. Without giving away the secret sauce here are a few of these projects.
Muon Detector
Muons are subatomic particles that occur natrually when cosmic particles impact our atmosphere. They carry far more energy than x-rays which makes them idea for a non-intrusive inspection system. My role has been to impove the electronics - smaller, lighter, faster & less expensive.
New Design
Our team was responsible for all aspects, from requirements generation through schematic, layout, firmare and logic synthesis, up to and including verification, validation and regulatory testing.
Improved Muon Detector
Today's detector electronics have been simplified, yet, offer improved reliability and performance at a significantly lower cost. I was never a fan of the oiqitous DB-25 that was so popular among printers of the 80's.
